Introduction
The biblical meaning of obedience is hearing the word of God and putting it into practice.
Relationship in obedience
To obey you must cultivate a relationship. For example, children have a relationship with their parents and their obedience to them is based on that relationship.
You must trust someone in order to love them. Such trust must be based on the truth and the truth is proven by actions.
2 Timothy 3:7, there can be much learning with too little truth. May we have much knowledge of the truth in our learning.
5 benefits of obedience:
1. The gift of the Holy Spirit (v.15-17)
Jesus promised not to leave us as orphans but to send us another helper- the Holy Spirit. “Another” means identical/of the same kind. The Holy Spirit helps us to walk in faith and He leads us into all the truth. He empowers us to walk in faith. The Holy Spirit will never leave us. Jesus said that He will be with us forever. When we walk in obedience we are empowered to obey all the more. Walking in disobedience is walking in sin.
2. Obedience leads to revelation (v.18-21).
The disciples were to see Jesus after His resurrection.
Those who accept and obey God’s commandments are the ones who love Him. When we authenticate our love to God through obedience we shall receive the revelation of Jesus Christ. Matthew 7:3-5, you are able to see clearer when you walk in obedience. Remove the plank in your eye (correct your ways) to see clearly.
3. Obedience leads to intimacy with God (v.22-26)
Jesus was to reveal Himself to His disciples and not to the world. To the obedient Jesus said that He, as well as God the Father, would come and make a home in such. A home is a place of comfort, security and rest. Allow God to make His abode in you by walking in obedience.
4. Obedience leads to peace (v. 27-31).
God gives us peace that the world cannot give.
Philippians 4:7, “and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”
When we walk in obedience Satan cannot have power over us. Sin steals our peace.
5. Obedience leads to fruitfulness (John 15:8-10).
The fruit of remaining in Christ and fruitfulness in the relationships we have. (Gal. 5:22-23)
Conclusion
Obeying God is proof of our love for Him. If you are not obeying you do not love God. Let us obey God like Abraham.
