Serving the Lord with gladness and getting more out of singing

Reference: Psalms (100:1-2)

Introduction:

God has given us an opportunity to serve Him in different ways and different departments. Singing is one of those ways and it has a potential of reaping great blessing from God.

Purpose of singing to God;
1. To praise God.
We sing to praise God. This comes from the Greek word hymno which means to praise.
The bible encourages us that when we meet, we should speak to each other in hymns and psalms, that is; praising God.
In Acts (16:25), Paul and Silas while in jail sang to God.

2. To teach and admonish one another.
Many songs are directed to us. These songs are designed to help us see the glory of God in one another.

3. To be filled and enriched.
Apostle Paul charged the Ephesians in Ephesians (5:18) to be filled with the spirit. Vs (19)of the same book instructs us to sing and make melodies to God

How to get most out of singing:

1. Engage the mind as you sing.
We should be careful and check the lyrics of the song as some songs are not scripturally right. Give careful attention to the lyrics of the song.

2. Engage our hearts as we sing.
Colossians (3:16)
We are advised to sing with grace in our hearts.
Try as much as possible not to be distracted during the time of singing.
Ephesians (5:19b)- this verse encourages us to make melody with all our heart.

3. Expand the sphere of your singing.
Get and know as many songs as you can. It’s important to sing at all times not only when we are in gatherings like in church.Even during our prayer time, we should make time to also sing praises to God.
Singing like prayer ought to be done spontaneously; everywhere and anytime. As christians we should take advantage of any opportunity to sing .

Conclusion.
It’s good to sing praises because it’s beautiful – Psalms (147:1)
Singing is like any other activity we do in church. The more we put into it, the more we get out of it. Let us increase our joy in singing.
Let us rekindle the act of worship and may David’s attitude describe our own when it comes to singing.
