Scripture : 2 Cor. 8:1-7
Introduction:
We are not blessed the same way. We cannot give the same way. But we can give in a way that shows that we love God. Apostle Paul gives an example of Titus, who started a project of helping the needy in Jerusalem. He tells the Corinthians to do what they have already seen in the people of Macedonia. The Corinthians are people who do not give. We should do what we have learnt from others.
A Church that was not a Giver
The Corinthian church, as addressed in the epistle, was not a giving church (epistles were letters done for general circulation). The Corinthian church was gifted in prophecy and tongues, until they were asked by Paul to have a few of them prophesy while others judge. They were gifted in knowledge, diligence and love. Paul now admonishes them to have the grace of giving also abound in them.
Saved pockets
It is commendable when the church has given despite pressing needs. While Titus was asked to complete the work, the Corinthians were asked to be partners in the work. With a tendency of not giving, it is not just a denial of blessings to self, but also a sign of disobedience. Many people have every being of them born again, except their pockets.
To give our substances is to open an opportunity for the Lord to open doors for us. We should not become stingy even to the Lord. We must learn that we cannot deceive the Lord (or the devil for that matter). There are churches where people have to be soothed with well worded songs and poems in order for them to give.
Giving in the abundance of joy
One day Jesus stood and watched as people gave. And He saw a woman who gave all she had. And He commented that she gave more than any other as she gave everything she had. We must allow our pockets, just as our sweet words, to get saved.
The people of Macedonia were in deep poverty and a great trial of affliction. But they gave in the abundance of their joy. We do not give because we are needless, but rather because we have put our priorities right. We know that God is no man’s debtor. He will help us accomplish every need. We cannot deceive ourselves either. God does not increase taxes like the government does.
Conclusion: Giving works!
Giving is a lesson and a test that the Lord gives to us. He gives us the opportunity to allow him open doors for us. When you realise that you’re not doing well financially, you must seek the Lord and He will do great things for you. Giving works. It is not a loss. It is good to be truthful to ourselves so that we can have the confidence of asking from the Lord. Give your offerings. Tithes. In the building fund.
