Wondering or Pondering

SCRIPTURE: Luke 2:18-19

Introduction
The sermon focuses on the difference between wondering and pondering when it comes to the promises of God. It challenges us to reflect on whether we approach God’s Word and works with doubt (wondering) or with careful thought and faith (pondering). The distinction shapes our responses to God’s blessings and trials.
Definitions:
Wondering: Thinking with doubt, suspicion, worry, or questioning God’s actions.
Pondering: Thoughtfully reflecting, meditating, and carefully considering God’s promises with faith and expectancy

Key Points
1. Mary’s Example of Pondering vs. People Wondering
 Luke 2:18-19:
– The people wondered at the shepherds’ message of Jesus’ birth, filled with questions and doubt.  Mary, however, pondered these things in her heart, carefully reflecting on God’s promises regarding Jesus.

2. Jesus’ Ministry and the Crowd’s Doubt
 Luke 4:22-30:
– The people marveled (wondered) at Jesus’ gracious words but questioned, “Isn’t this Joseph’s son?” They doubted His divine authority because of His humble background. o Jesus rebuked their disbelief by referencing Elijah and Elisha (God’s work with the widow and Naaman), show in how faith matters more than position or status.

3. Peter’s Wondering at the Resurrection
 Luke 24:12 and John 20:10-11:
– Peter saw the empty tomb but left wondering what had happened, still unsure.
– In contrast, Mary Magdalene stayed, pondering and weeping at the tomb. Because of her persistence and faith, God revealed the risen Christ to her first.

4. The Crowd’s Wondering at Miracles
 Acts 3:11-12:
-After a lame man was healed, the people wondered and marveled, fixing their eyes on Peter and John.
-Peter challenged them to look beyond the miracle to the power of God at work.

5. Reflecting on God’s Promises with Pondering Hearts
 Psalm 136:
This Psalm calls us to give thanks to God by carefully reflecting (pondering) on:

Verses 1-4: Who God is – He is good, loving, and merciful.
Verses 5-9: God as Creator – He made the heavens, earth, and lights, showing His might.
Verses 10-15: God’s deliverance – He redeemed Israel from Egypt, showing His faithfulness.
Verses 16-22: God’s restoration – He provided land and salvation for His people.
Verses 23-26: God’s ongoing help – He remembers us in our lowly states and provides for us.

Application:
 Instead of focusing on worldly fears or doubts, we are called to ponder God’s faithfulness and promises from January to December.
 Reflect on personal deliverance, protection, provision, and restoration from God throughout the year.
 Ponder God’s Word and His works in your life rather than allowing doubt to cloud your faith.

Conclusion
The sermon calls us to be pondering Christians, not wondering Christians.
 Wondering leads to doubt, anger, and missed blessings.
 Pondering leads to faith, persistence, and deeper revelation of God’s promises.
